"My roommate expects me to pay her sister’s share of the rent because I have a job."

I live with one roommate Rose, I traveled for a family get-together. When I came back, I found someone else in the apartment turns out it was Rose's younger sister.

I asked her what was going on, and she casually said, "Oh, she just came from the village and will be staying here for a few days while she applies for a job." |
  • 04
asked her why she didn't let me know beforehand, and she said, "I thought you wouldn't mind." Fast forward: those "few days" turned into what feels like forever. Her sister is always home

doing absolutely nothing. No job hunting, no house chores, just using up our space, electricity, water, and food. She is basically moved in.

When rent was due, I divided it into three and sent my one-third. Rose called me saying I didn't send my full rent. I told her to divide the total into three, and that is my part.
  • 07
She flipped. Said her sister isn't working yet and I've been working for years, so I should be able to afford the full half. That I should "overlook it" and "render a little help."

I told her point blank: You didn't ask me before bringing your sister in, and now you expect me to pay her rent too? Absolutely not. She called me wicked and stormed off.

Successful_Voice... 17h ago Seems reasonable that if three people are sharing an apartment, each should pay one-third. If her sister is not in a financial position to pay

her fair share, since Rose invited her sister then Rose can pay her portion as well as her own. If she cannot afford it, she needs to tell her sister to move out.

. CherryCoveny OP 17h ago Since she is kind enough and as the sister she can pay up the two third of the rent.

springvelvet95 • 17h ago I'd be careful of language that implies the sister is a 3rd tenant. It may sound like you are offering tenancy, (by requiring rent), which would

give her tenant rights and no way do you want that to happen. I'm not sure what I would do here. You don't want to stay with this roommate, so I would suggest having the sister sign the lease, releasing you (hopefully) and get out of dodge.

Be prepared to look for a new place. You don't want to roommate with them, and they may be dumb enough to get caught soon.
